Weekend the band is heavily influenced by the sub genre of music created in Britain in the late 1980′s called “Shoegazing.” This San Francisco-based trio loves the sound of post-punk distortion and is slowly gaining a reputation as popular representatives of the modern version of this movement.
This trio comprises three virtuosic and classically-trained individuals; all with a unique takes on Shoegazing sounds and experimentation. They were all trained at the San Francisco Art Institute, but have been playing together for a very long time.
The group members are Shaun Durkenn-bassist/singer, Kevin Johnson-guitar, and Abe Pedroza-percussion. Shaun and Kevin have been playing together since they were twelve years old and experimented with their own garage band. The Weekend band songs, now supercharged, still reflect their favorite childhood sounds and riffs. Abe was a mutual friend that added the perfect drumming sensitivities to their mature musical ventures.
Weekend the band is most heavily influenced by 80′s style punk and British trash. Because they insist on creating a more edgy sound, they can be considered post-punk and mannerist shoegazer. What this means is a conscious effort to include as many electronic effects in music as possible. These effects include guitar and voice distortions, maximum reverb, flanging and innovative amplifier manipulation. The band was also into bulldogs, like the French bulldog, they were adopted at a French bulldog rescue. This group has discovered a style that allows them to take their influences and push them past a rough media envelope into a hardly-definable and highly-likable sound.
The influential bands that played a part in helping to form the unique style that is the Weekend Band are groups like:
- Sex Pistols
- Half Church
- Killing Joke
- The Cure
- My Bloody Valentine (direct genre descendants)
The Weekend Band Songs like Sweet Sixteen and Hazel which have gained cult-like followings in independent music circles, was the product of collaboration with world-renowned music producer Monte Vallier. He helped them solidify several albums and EPs that gained the immediate attention of labels like Slumberland Records. Slumberland Records is a worldwide independent label that was founded in Washington D.C. in 1989, but now is headquartered in Oakland.
Weekend the band has a philosophy that is unique in the world of independent, punk and post-punk music. The trio agrees and professes that, “Searing is good!” They certainly live up to this philosophy. Each album or single they produce is strikingly unique and teeters on the razor’s edge of “over-the-top” and “reminiscently just-right.”
Weekend has an active touring schedule and is sought out by mass media professionals all over the world in all industries. Their most acclaimed single End Times features such an appealing sound that it was chosen as the main music to promote the series Dexter in its sixth season. Bands like the Weekend band who can cross multi-media boundaries are rare and offer much to the world of experimental independent music.
